Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Are you suffering from pain on the inside of the ankle or even the bottom of your foot? Did you know that this pain could actually be caused by something known as Tarsal tunnel syndrome. People suffering from Tarsal tunnel syndrome may have burning or shooting pain or even numbness on their ankles or bottom of their foot.

Tarsal tunnel syndrome can occur if the nerves in your Tarsal tunnel on your ankle becomes compressed. Tarsal tunnel syndrome can be caused by a variety of different reasons including the following:

  • Long periods of walking or standing
  • Exercise (a new exercise routine)
  • pressure on the nerves on the tarsal tunnel
  • swollen tendons
  • Injury
  • Being over weight

People with a whom have a more outward tilt in their stance can be more commonly affected by this syndrome than those who do not. This also means people who have fallen arches have a higher chance of getting Tarsal tunnel syndrome.

You can also get Tarsal tunnel syndrome is you sustain a injury to your ankle, for example a sprained ankle may cause swelling which might compress the nerves in the tarsal tunnel and in effect will cause this syndrome.

Please see a doctor if you think you have tarsal tunnel syndrome or are experiencing and pain or symptoms as tarsal tunnel syndrome can cause lasting damage to your nerves. Early diagnosis and treatment can easily prevent this from happening though.
